Isle of Sark Shipping Company Ltd is owned by the island of Sark and has operated the year-round lifeline Passenger and Freight service between Guernsey and Sark since 1969. There is no airport on Sark therefore the only link to and from Guernsey is by sea. Being 9 miles apart, the journey between Guensey and Sark takes approximately 45 minutes and operates year-round during daylight hours.
The majority of the 45,000 return passengers carried each year on our vessels are visitors travelling to and from Sark. The main tourist season runs from April to October, but a regular Passenger service also operates during the winter months in order for the Sark Residents to continue travelling to and from Guernsey.
Isle of Sark Shipping Company Ltd currently ownes and operates two passenger vessels throughout the year, occassionally supplemented with a passenger vessel chartered during summer months. Our vessel 'Bon Marin de Serk ' was commissioned by the company and has a steel monohull with aluminium superstructure. She has been in operation since 1983, has a gross tonnage of 118.40, an overall length of 20.6 metres and beam of 6.15 metres, she carries 131 passengers in the summer, 98 passengers in the winter and is powered by two Volvo Penta 700 hp diesel engines.
Our second passenger is the 'Sark Venture' which was built in 1985 and after being purchases by Isle of Sark Shipping Co Ltd underwent a complete and refit and conversion in 1993, after which she carried out the dual role of either passenger vessel carrying 122 passengers or freight vessel carrying 12 passengers. Sark Venture is 20 metres in length with a beam of 6 metres, she is powered by two Iveco 450 hp deisel engines and operates at a speed of 10 knots.
The company also operates a freight service between Sark and Guernsey, carrying in the region of 6000 tonnes of cargo a year. This services runs 4 times a week during the summer months and 2-3 times a week during the winter months. All of the island's supplies are loaded onto our freight vessel by a static harbour crane in Guernsey's St Peter Port Harbour and unloaded by Sark's mobile crane, which operates in both Maseleine and Creux Harbours on Sark. This freight service is operated by the latest addition to our fleet ' The Sark Viking' which was commissioned by the company and began service in January 2008. 'Sark Viking' has an overall lentgh of 21.24 metres, beam of 7.66 metres and a gross tonnage of 103.98, she is capable of carrying 70 tonnes of freight on deck. Powered by two Iveco 450 hp diesel engines this vessel operates at a service speed of 10 knots carrying 3 crew members and up to 12 fare paying passengers.
Isle of Sark Shipping Co. Ltd. also has access to a number of 12 seat high-speed passenger launches for private charter to and from Sark. Sark has two main harbours.
